Your First Rank Testing --
The Moment of Truth!!

The First Rank Testing Scenario
(Student Perspective):

  • My First Rank Testing is Tomorrow!!
    I feel Sick!
  • I know my form and one-steps
but what if I blank out?? So you go over them 100 more times.
  • I always get those Rising Blocks and Inner Forearm Blocks mixed up!!
So you go over them 100 more times.
  • What if the Judges ask me questions? Can I remember the Tenets and
    the Tae Kwon Do Oath??
  • Now, how many movements are in my form? What does my form and my
    White Belt Mean??
  • Can I remember how to
    Tie my Belt?

  • I've got to remember to say, "Yes, Sir" and "Yes, Ma'am" and YELL really LOUD!!

You think that you will never be able to remember everything!!!

**Note**The average First Rank Testing Fees for Lower Ranking Belts are from $70 to $120 and typically includes certificate and patch (on initial testing). Any Belts awarded are at extra cost and one stipulation to testing is that your Organizational Class Fees must be current. **

Your First Rank Testing Scenario
( Instructors and Judges Perspective):

  • I hate ironing! I should have taken my uniform to the cleaners to have it pressed! I can't Judge a Rank Testing in a Wrinkled Up Uniform!!!
  • Is it my turn to bring BreakFast for all the Judges??
  • I can't believe I have a Pimple right in the middle of my forehead the night before a Testing!! This thing is so huge the students won't be able to concentrate. They'll probably be wondering who popped Me in the head with an Escrima Stick.
  • Where would be a good place to eat after testing??
  • I've got to remember to use the bathroom Before we bow in and get started this time!

You see, this is how your perspective changes the more you advance in
Tae Kwon Do or whatever Martial Art you are in.

As a Judge, you are more concerned about making sure everything goes smoothly soas not to upset your students even more. I actually have had students get so worked up and nervous about Rank Testing that they vomited right before the ceremony began.

Don't get so all bent out of shape over testing. We are all only human and there was only one of us, Jesus Christ, that was Perfect.

I always recommend that my students just take it easy the night before a testing.

As I mentioned, Some students get so overwhelmed with fear that they actually throw up! Please don't let this happen to you. Re-Read the White Belt Page.

On that page, I wrote that "every Grand Master Black Belt that ever was and ever will be was a clumsy, awkward White Belt" just like you are now.

The Instructors Judging your testing know exactly how you feel and believe me they have compassion for you. Your Instructors want to see you succeed, not fall flat on your face.

If you mess up at Testing,
SO WHAT!! At least you were there trying your best and the Judges know that. Your Instructors will always be there to help you.

Just remain calm and do the best that you can do. That is all your Instructors want you to do and is expected of you.

**Tip: Try to imagine your Instructor as a White Belt or Yellow Belt. For my students, here's me as a Yellow Belt.**

Take Care and DO YOUR BEST!!
